Hi, Everybody,

Another project I mentioned and promised to write up. Please note
that so far this is only in one size - women's XL...I like my vests
loose-fitting...but it's not *huge*.

I used Brunswick Illusions, an acrylic/cotton/polyester blend in a
black/white/grey heathery mix. KP 2 worked well for this yarn, with
a gauge of approx. 16sts x 30 rows.

I also made the same vest in Brunswick Impressions, an
acrylic/cotton/wool etc. blend in a black/white/grey/maroon tweedy
mix using KP 3...but my notes are a bit sketchy. It looks like I
used the full 100 needles and knit 80 r to the underarm, and then
followed the same instructions up to the shoulders, but I can't
absolutely guarantee this.

The Illusions vest turned out slightly longer, but the width was not
appreciably different between the two, despite the KP difference. I
like them both!

Back
With KP2, and 100 sts, knit several rows in WY and then change to
vest yarn. Knit 100 rows to underarm shaping. B/O 5 sts at
beginning of next 2 rows, then 1 st at each end of next 6 rows, then
1 st at each end EOR 4x. Knit 60 more rows. Put centre 36 stitches
on holder for neck, and 17 stitches on each side for shoulders. I
did not do any neck shaping and the vest fits fine.

Front
With KP2 and 50 sts, as for back except shape only one side. Make 2
fronts, reversing shaping.

Sew together shoulder and side seams. I use HK techniques, 3 needle
B/O for shoulders, and mattress stitch for seams.

I HK all my edges. I generally use a needle size 1-2 smaller than
the size recommended on the ball band, which is the same size needle
I would start with if were HK the entire item. Sorry this is vague,
and my notes only suggest I used 4mm needles with both vests.

Armholes: Pick up stitches around each armhole and knit in k1,p1 rib
for approx. 1". B/O loosely. I picked up 110 sts for the Illusions
and 86 for the Impressions.

Bottom Band: With the Illusions, because the vest was longer and I
didn't want the ribbing to draw in, I picked up every stitch from the
body in k1,p1 for approx. 2". With the Impressions, I decreased from
200 down to 177 sts for the bottom band so that the ribbing would
draw in a bit more.

Button Band
With the Illusions, I picked up 4 sts for every 5 rows around the
entire front opening and k1,p1 rib for approx. 1 1/4". I spaced
buttonholes on the lower part before the shaping started.

With the Impressions, I knit a vertical rib with 9 sts in k1,p1 rib,
joining as I went, row for row. I did similar buttonholes as with
the other vest.

I've also done the same vest in Brunswick Monterey and KP3...this
turned out a bit big. Seed stitch bands look good, but don't help
with the fit, so I'm probably going to re-do in ribbing so it draws
in somewhat.

This is my first attempt at experimenting and designing. I'll be
happy to answer questions etc., and would appreciate feedback on my
pattern writing. This is enough for me but may be too cryptic and
non-standard for others. Please be forewarned that I'm not an
experienced designer and I've only been Bonding a few years. I'm
happy to share my pattern in response to requests from others.

I remember crocheting these to wear. They are extrordinarily simple.

Cast on enough stitches to go around you very loosely. How many stitches
depends on your stitch pattern and how many stitches it takes to repeat.
It also depends on how good you are at math for the dividing.

Knit/crochet to the underarms which should be very low.

Divide the stitches as follows:
1/4 for the left front, 1/2 for the back, and 1/4 for the right front.

Knit/crochet 2/3 of the first front, bind off/slip stitch the same
number of stitches for the armhole, knit/crochet the back minus the number
of stitches bound off, bind off/slip stitch for the next armhole, then knit/crochet
the other front.

Now you need to treat each section separately. For the fronts,
knit/crochet straight up until you are halfway up from the bottom of the armhole.
You'll need to measure the recipient for this.

At the halfway point start decreasing every other row for the other half of the length.
This can get tricky. If you decrease to half the number of stitches before you reach
the shoulder, knit/crochet straight until you are done with the armhole.
Bind off at the shoulders. For the back, knit straight up to the shoulders.

To finish, sew up the shoulder seams, put crab stitches all the way
around and around the armholes. Add two ties with little tassles on the front
where the decreases start. Done.
