Hi! I received requests for the teddy bear and doll pattern. We used a
doll pattern that is still being sold, so I cannot share it. However,
the teddy bear pattern was a handout from Rhea Flint so I can share it
with you. Use the keyplate that you usually use for Red Heart yarn
(worsted weight, which is heavier than DK).

If you knit tightly enough with the DK weight, it will work. The chunky
might be better. However, if you have some DK wool it is fun to felt
down the teddy, then stuff it. I just toss them into the hot water of a
washing machine for about 10 minutes, stuff it, and dry it. When doing
this, leave the back open for stuffing instead of the top of the head.
You will find that the size of the Teddy will vary in accordance to the
yarn used and the keyplate. It isn't exact and that is part of the
fun! We had Teddy Bears ranging from 8" to 16"! Actually, some of them
turned out looking more like kitties.

You want to have your stitches dense enough that the stuffing doesn't
show through (KP2?). She asks you do things that don't seem to make sense,
but the pattern works so "just do it" :-) Have fun!

Leave a long tail in yarn to sew together when finished. Cast on 60
sts. using the e wrap method.
Knit 28 rows. Put machine on partial knit.

Nose: Put 26 sts on left side in hold (non working), knit 1 row and
manually wrap.
Put 26 sts on the right side in hold, manually wrap. 8 sts are in work
at the center of machine.
Knit 1 row - wrap - pull 1 needle on left - knit 1 row to left - wrap.
Continue until 2 needles are in work. Push back 2 needles into work on
right - knit 1 row - wrap , continue pushing back 2 needles on each side

until 8 needles are in work. Put all needles on left in work - knit 1
rows. Take machine off partial hold - kit 1 row on all needles.
Put row counter to 28 and knit to row 70.

Bottom (Rear).
Put machine in partial hold.
Put 42 needles opposite carriage in hold. 18 needles remain in knit
position. Carriage on right- knit 1 row - pull 1 needle, knit 1 row
left - continue this until 12 needles remain in work. Put all needles
in work, knit 1 row to left. Machine still on partial knit.
Put 42 needles opposite carriage in hold. 18 needles remain in knit
position. Knit as you did the right side. Put row counter back to 71,
take machine off partial knit. All needles are in work, knit to row 80.

Right Leg:
Row counter at 000, machine in partial knit.
Put 30 needles in hold. Knit to row 24. Change to darker yarn for pads
on feet, knit 3 rows. Move every other st to next needle. Leave empty
needles out of work. Knit 1 row. Leave long tail, cut yarn. With db eye
needle, take off sts, gather stitches.

Left leg is knit the same.

Arms. (make 2) Leave long tail of yarn, e-wrap cast on 28 sts. Knit to
row 26, change to darker yarn and knit 3 rows. Move every other stitch
to next needle leaving empty needles out of work. Knit 1 row. With
double eye needle take off stitches and gather.

Sewing together. Fold legs and sew to crotch; sew up back seam of
body. Stuff legs and body solid to top. Sew the E on stitches across
head. Run a slant st on both sides of ears. Go to center of ear and
catch point and pull down with a stitch. Fasten off. Wrap double yarn
around neck, pull tight and tie off. For arms, sew down side, stuff.
With seam side on bottom, pin in place to side of body. Sew with yarn
back stitching all the way around. Embroider eyes, nose, and mouth.
Tie a ribbon around the neck and use a pom pom for the tail.

Please excuse any typos.........hopefully I didn't miss any, but........

Knit 25 rows on Mattel knitter, using white worsted weight yarn.

[on Bond: Use KP 2 to make the fabric tight so the stuffing doesn't
show. Start on WY and use an open cast on. Leaving about 12" tail to sew the
back seam, knit 17 sts across for 25 rows - this allows 1 st for the seam in
back. Use a yarn needle and run a length of yarn thru all the sts of
row 1 to draw up the bottom later.]

Now divide the 16 sts up so 5 are designated an ear, 3 for the top of
the head, 5 more for another ear and the last 3 for the top of the head,
back. I left them on the machine and reversed the handle to knit the ear. You
must knit past the edge st about 3 hooks until the st on your last ear
needle flips over the base peg. It appears that 3 more sts have knit,
but they will undo when you reverse the handle. Same applies to going the
other direction. Knit 7 rows, then move the end st on each side to the next
hook in, leaving 3 sts. (This took a little work with a yarn needle and a
tiny crochet hook.) Knit 2 more rows, then draw up the 3 sts, leaving a long
tail to sew the ear with. In the mean time you will discover the rest
of the sts have probably fallen off the pegs. Run a piece of scrap yarn
thru 3 sts on either side of the ear to hold the head sts and replace the other
5 sts onto the machine and join another yarn piece to repeat making
another ear as above. Leave an even longer tail on this ear, as it will be used
to graft the top of the head closed.

[On Bond:
Your sts are designated as: 2 st for back of head, 5 for ear, 3 for
front of head, 5 for ear, 2 st for back of head.
Knit the first 7 sts from one edge and place the rest onto a st holder.
Use a claw weight. Remove the first 2 edge sts to a holder (these 2 form
part of the back of the head) and knit 6 more rows on the 5 ear sts.
Decrease 1 st at each side of ear and knit 2 more rows. Leaving a 6" tail to sew
up the ear seam with, draw up the 3 sts on it.
Join another piece of yarn and knit the other 5 ear sts 7 rows, decrease
1 st on each side, knit 2 rows, then draw up the 3 sts on a 12" tail that
will be used to graft the top of the head also. Now seam the back seam shut
using the long beginning tail. You can remove the WY also, as the
length of yarn in Row 1 will hold the sts.]

Finishing for Mattel and Bond:
Seam the ears shut down to the top of the head. I had a starting tail
to knot with on the second ear at its base, then used the long tail to
graft the front and back head sts together across the top of the head. At the
end of the graft, there was another tail end from sewing the first ear seam
to knot its end to. Turn the bunny right side out. I sewed small pony
beads on with yarn, 2 blue for eyes and a pink nose. The ears didn't need
stuffed. I stuffed my bunny with used fabric softener sheets I save. I
tied a contrasting yarn bow under the neck to make the head, then
stuffed the body and drew up the bottom and tied it closed. He could also make
a nice beanbag and would sit up on his own if some heavy stuff were put
inside to weight him. Like acquarium gravel in a piece of nylon stocking. His
body is also the right size to put a plastic egg inside for the body and
maybe a small styro ball for the head if he is only a decoration,
because then he won't be washable.

I think we can turn him into a cat if the ears are only 3 rows long.
Decrease them 2 sts each row to a point. Knot some string whiskers
under the bead nose.

Looking at him, I think we need a pompom tail for the bunny and a 3 st
I-cord tail for a cat. It needs to attach about 5 rows from the bottom
edge. Drat, this would have attached easier if I hadn't sewn the bottom
shut already!

If you have some gray yarn, then you can knit a grey hare for you
grannies!
