Bond Machine Knitting - Pumpkin Sweater Pattern

Subject: [BOND] Pumpkin Sweater

        I was thinking if I had a little one, which I don't, but I have a
day care teacher for a daughter and I am going to take the same basic
sweater pattern with drop sleeves and do the following, thought it might
interest others:-

        I will knit the sweater in bright orange, and do the shaker stitch
rib every 5 stitches to form the indentations for the pumpkin, then I will
knit the bands all in forest green.

        I will make small triangles in black, 3 of them two for the eyes and
one for the nose, and make a felt appique for the mouth.  I sew and have
chosen to use " Tack It Over Again " from Aleenes glue line and will either
use that or some velcro to attach the eyes nose and mouth for a Halloween
sweater, and then after Halloween it can be used as a fall sweater.

        If I were to knit the basic roll top cap, I would do mine as
follows, I would cast on the number of stitches in waste yarn and knit for
around 6 rows, then I would knit around 10 - 12 rows in forest green, and
not rib them, allow them to roll up, then I would knit the rest of the cap
in orange and ladder every 6th sttich for the pumpkin look.  I would then
decrease every other stitch before casting off.

        For a set of leaves, I would do the following, I would start with a
cast on of about 3 stitches, and then increase each side every other row to
approximately 14 stitches, then knit 2 rows, decrease every other row down
to 3 sttiches and make another one the same.  Stitch these together, and
here is the fun part, put a small chenille stem or pipe cleaner in the
centre of the leave before closing up, then stitch down each side of it,
this gives you the ability to bend it into interesting shapes, I would then
make another leaf and do the same.  For the crown, or the stem, I would use
green and cast on approximately 10 stitches and knit for 6 rows, cast off
and allow it to curl into its natural shape and attache this to the top.

        Sounds like it would make a cute cap.....also as our children have a
tendency to be out of sight in the winter, I would make mittens and a long
scarf in the same colours, neon would be real great or hunter orange , as
this is popular in the fall, and the children who walk and play outside
would most certainly be seen.  Now off to create another pumpkin sweater,
but first I got some Canadiana Colours on sale, have only 6 100 gram balls
and must design around it, will share my findings later.

        By the way, I have depleted my yarn purchase in less than 3 days by
60 - 50 grams skeins of ragg yarn, 3 - 100 gram skeins of worsted, plust 3
more 100 gram skeins of contrast colour and if we count the so called waste
yarn, there is another 3 skeins of wool.  I save my waste yarn and use it to
hook crazy quilt style patchwork mats.
