I've been lurking for awhile and really appreciate all the patterns, so
I thought I would contribute mine. I hope I can explain it in Bondeeese
well enough.

It is a stocking hat pattern which is very, very warm( I work outside
all day) and it is reversible, so you can have two different colored
hats at once.

I use Red Heart 4 ply
4st/6r = 1"

CO with WY 74 sts(fits avg. person)measure head and use guage to make
smaller or bigger.

K even for 135-140 rows depending on how big a hem you like, but I
wouldn't go over 140.

This is where you get to decide what color to make your hat. the first
35 or so rows are the top of one side of the hat then the next 65 will
be the body of the hat and the folded back hem part for both sides then
35 rows of the other side top of the hat.

These are all approx. figures you may have to make one first to learn
where to change your color schemes at exactly.

After you've knit 135-140 rows even you begin to decrease
Decrease Row: transfer Every other stitch to the needle beside it.
Knit 1 row even
*Repeat decrease row
knit 1 row even
Now thread needle and pull thru remaining stitches remove from machine
and pull up tight.*

rehang 74 stitches from bottom, putting 2 sts on each needle,( if you
leave an empty needle between each one it works out better)
then knit one row.
Repeat from * to * as on other end of hat above.

you will now have two gathered ends. sew edges together forming a
tube. Then fold hat inside itself at the middle. Now you have a two
layered stocking hat, when you fold up the hem you will have 4 layers at
your ears. I sew the two gathered tops to each other so they will stay
together.

You can make any combination of colors whith this thing, and it is very
warm.
I have long hair and I wear a ponytail most of the time, so I leave a
small space on both sides right above the hem unsewn so I can slip my
ponytail thru the hole. It helps hold my hat on too.
Well I hope this makes sense to you all, if not just give me a holler.

Also I make earwarmers, for when a hat is too much.

CO 74 st in wy
knit 40-50 rows even depending on personal preference as to width
rehang bottom stitches on machine over ones currently on machine,
knit one row even
Then I cast of a little tight in chain stitch. This forms a little
decorative edge that helps hold the earwarmer on your ears.

And again you can use intarsia, (I've been doing names on mine). I
really like these too.

Or you can use the same concept for a not so warm hat.

Co 74 sts knit even 25-30 rows( i like wide hems for ears)rehang bottom
sts to make double hem. then knit approx 35-40 more rows, decrease as
above and gather top and sew seam. This way you have 2 layers at ears
and 1 layer for hat part. This hat looks cool on the top of your head
too, not too pointy, kinda square.

decrease as above and gather top

You know that's an interesting question. I would say that each side
takes maybe3-4 ounces. the ear warmer doesn't take hardly any at all.
I usually use the big 8 oz redhearts and I have half a skein left after
doing the hat if i use two colors and double hat i use about 8
altogether. I think this is actually more than it takes but I'll say 8
just to be safe. The earwarmers you could probably make easy with a 3.5
oz skein.

You would first need their head measurements from around their
head at the brow. Then you would need a measurement for the length of
from the brow up to the top of the head.

My guage with red-heart is 4st = 1" so if the head is 10"around you
would need to cast on 40 sts. my row guage is 6 rows to the inch, so if
the length measurement were 10" then you would need to knit 60 rows plus
however much hem you want to fold backwards. Does that make any sense?
Hope I helped.
You need to check how many sts you knit to the inch, and how many rows
you knit to the inch.
