Hi Guys I thought I would Share a Pattern for the month of august....
Baby Knit Hat
1 skein sayelle 100% acrylic worsted weight yarn
or
2 skeins baby weight yarn any kind any color
You need about 3 ounces
Key plate # 3
CO 68 needles with MC leaving a 2 foot length....K 40 R.......Push out
every third needle to HP...CO those needles onto WY.....Push those
needle back to NWP....Knit 10 R....Latch up CO stitches to form
ribs....Break off MC leaving 2 foot length...K 6 R with WY....remove
from machine.....Do Not remove hem yet.....Fold over ribs and use the
long length of the tail to sew down......Before removing hem...Use the
long length of that tail to thread threw each stitch that is attched to
the weighted hem....Remove hem and gather stitches....Sew side seam and
add pom pom to top...Hide yarn ends and your done...
You could also do a rolled edge by continuing the stocking net stitch
for 10 rows and then BO....Then just let it roll the way it wants to...
Or you could do a picot edge by K 5 R....Then transfer every third
stitch over one stitch leaving a hole...Make sure all needles are still
in WP with LATCHES OPEN....Knit 5 more rows....CO onto WY and then fold
over and finish like before....

Subject: [BOND] newborn hat pattern
Hi all: I developed this for my beginner, never touched a machine
before class. This is similar to the basic hat from
Bond's pattern books, but I wanted something sized down for a newborn
and I did the sewing up a little differently. My neighbor says the
instructions are written like they are in a book entitled machine
knitting for dummies . . . .
Techniques learned: waste yarn cast on, basic knitting (stockinette
stitch [knit one row, purl one row]), backstitch bindoff or crochet
bindoff, invisible seam.
Materials needed: small amount of waste yarn
3 oz skein worsted weight yarn
keyplate Bond 3
darning needle
1. Cast on 52 stitches and knit 6 rows of waste yarn.
2. Change to main yarn and knit 27 rows ending carriage on left.
3. Bind off using either a) backstitch bindoff or b) knit another
row in one keyplate size larger and do crochet bind off. Leave a 24
inch tail.
4. Sew side seams together and draw stitches through main yarn
stitches with waste yarn attached. Remove waste yarn and tighten up
stitches at the top. Secure and fasten off.
Alternatives: Convert every other stitch of the last 6 to make a 1x1
rib. Be creative with colors (i.e. red with green top for
strawberry).

In April of 1997, I printed instructions for child-preemie hats which are
mostly done on the Bond, but which (unfortunately for me) contain
instructions for decreasing by hand. Can someone convert this for me?

I changed the pattern to read as follows:
After taking the hat off on waste yarn, decrease by putting two
stiches on half the needles originally used. Pull needles out to upper
workin position and knit 1 row. Take off on about 6 rows of waste yarn
again. Put three stiches on about 1/3 of the needles used, there will
be 2 stiches on the last 2 needles. Pull needles out to upper working
position and knit 1 row. Do this row one more time. Pull yarn through
last few stitches and take off machine. You can use this last yarn to
sew up side. I hope this h*lps.

Bonding Buddies,
I just completed my first totally original pattern and as chance would
have it, Lorrie, it's for babies. I've never written out a pattern
before, so if there are problems with it, please let me know.
I worked it out on my LK150, so I provide a tension for that and the
gauge.
Basic Baby Bonnet Pattern
T 4 22st and 32 r = 4 in
50 g ball of baby or fingering yarn (plenty left over for booties)
Cast on 22 stitches WY knit 6 r.
Change to MC and knit 32 r. COL
E-wrap 22 stitches from right to left.
Carefully knit across. COR
E-wrap 22 st from left to right and knit back across 66 st. Knit 32 r.
RC 66 (You have a "T" shaped piece) Remove onto WY.
Rehang and knit 1 r. (turning r for hem) Remove onto WY again and
rehang. Knit 6 r for hem.CO , turn hem back and sew into place leaving
ends open.
Sew side seams so you now have a cube with 2 open sides for face and
neck. Rehang 66 neck edge st onto 48 needles. T3 knit 10 r and ladder
for k1p1 ribbing. CO.
Thread ribbon or crochet cord (for ties) through hem at face edge. You
may gather the hem slightly so edge flares a bit. Stitch ties in place
catching both ribbing and hem.
I don't know if my next GC is a boy or girl, so I made the hat sort of
gender neutral. You can do the hem in an eylet stitch and perhaps add
some increases
evenly across r 60 to make it more frilly. I used a different color for
the edge of the hem, the ribbing and the ties. I'm sure all you creative
folks will come up with wonderful variations.

Infant Hat
This will fit a 15 inch to 16 inch head.
50g Baby yarn, Keyplate #1, Gauge 6 rows =3D1", 5 stitches =3D 1"
1. Cast on 40 stitches with the closed edge cast on.
2. Knit 80 rows (16 inch head) , 75 rows ( 14-14.5 inch head)
3. Bind off
4. Place right sides together and sew cast on and cast off =20
together.
5. Gather one open edge and tack closed.
6. Turn right side out and rollup bottom edge.
The stitches wil be going from side to side on the hat. I got 2 hats =
out of the 50g ball of Copley Popcorn yarn I had lying around. I hope =
someone else can use this pattern. In NH, we use to knit caps for the =
newborns to wear when they left the hospital. Its one way to recycle =
those gauge swatches.

I have made a lot of these and and they are really cute as well as warm.
My only change, as I made them, was to knit the ties on instead of braiding.
I did this by hanging four (4) stitches from the bottom of the earflap,
inside facing you, and knit for 50 rows. There is also a pom-pom on
the top in the picture, which I think finishes it off nicely. I also have a
note on the bottom that I made a newborn size using baby weight
yarn, KP #2 and the small size directions.
EARFLAP HAT

This pattern was donated to the magazine to provide a pattern
for people to make hats for the Caps for Kids program so is
available for all to use.
Keyplate # 3
Worsted Yarn (100 gram)
Small (Medium, Large)
With waste yarn, cast on 64 (74, 82) (open edge) and knit 8 rows
Change to hat yarn and knit 12 (14, 16) rows (inside edge of hat)
With COR put all needles in HP except 13 thru 32 (14 thru 37, 17
thru 42) on right side.
Knit one row to the left. Put needles 26 thru 32 (28 thru 37, 31 thru
42) on right side in HP. Knit to the right.
Move one more needle forward to HP on the side opposite the carriage
before knitting each row. This reduces the number of stitches to shape
earflaps. Use claw weights.
Continue in this manner until 2 (2, 4) stitches remain. Work 1 row.
Now bring 1 needle back to FWP on the side opposite the carriage
before knitting each row until all earflap needles are all back in WP
COR. Put all needles except 26 thru 32 (28 thru 37, 30 thru 42) in
FWP and work across to the other end and repeat for other earflap
on needles 13 thru 26 (14 thru 27, 17 thru 29) on left side.
When this is complete, put all needles in FWP With MC knit across all
needles to put COR.
Use any graph pattern that will fit into the # of rows you have to work now
before the hem row. (This will cover up any floats on the pattern back ).
Work 12 (14, 16) rows.
Make hem by hanging first row of hat onto needles to turn hem and attach
(Use Keyplate # 4 for this one row.) Knit 30 (32, 34) rows
Transfer every other stitch to the adjacent needle across the row. Put
empty needles into NWP and work 8 rows even.
Cut yarn leaving a long end. Thread tapestry needle and thread through
all stitches on needles. Work carriage across and work will come off neatly.
Gather tightly and secure. Sew down seam. Remove waste yarn.
Pull 6 strands of yarn halfway through point of earflap - this will give you
12 strands.
Separate 4 strands 3 times and braid. Finish with an overhand knot. Trim the
ends (Instant tassel).
NOTE:
There is an article in the magazine about Caps for Kids.
This was organized by Bonnie Greene of Concorde, Calif. in 1983 and 600
caps were donated that year. 80,000 donated in 1990. I don’t have the figures
for subsequent years, but this is a very worthwhile cause.
